Only two more weeks until Fall Break! This year is already flying by!
*Students may send in book fair money this week. Please send in a labeled baggie and let them know you are putting it in their bag. They will go with parent volunteers to choose their books. We have been learning about apples. We studied a non-fiction book called "Apples for Everyone." We learned the following new vocabulary words: orchard, harvest, ripe, farmer's market and roadside stand. We will take a break from apples for the week of 9/24 and pick back up with it the week before Fall Break. At that time we will learn about the life cycle of the apple. Please make sure that you are reviewing all the sight words, letter sound and math skills. The end of the nine weeks is just around the corner! I will be conducting final testing the week of October 1. Thanks for all you do at home:)

This week and the weeks leading up to Fall Break our unit of study is "Toys and Play." In order to add rigor to meet the needs of my students, we will be supplementing with additional fiction and nonfiction studies! During our foundational skills block, the children are doing a great job learning all the different, engaging and interactive ways that we learn about phonics, grammar and new sight words. I am using a new right-brained system for teaching sight words this year called "SnapWords". I'm anxious to see how the bees love this! Our study in math was very simple in the beginning, but now we are starting to learn about "hidden partners" within five. The activities for "hidden partners" is an excellent prerequisite for addition. (The children are having so much fun with it that they don't even realize how much they are learning!) It's a bit tricky at first, but a great conceptual view for composing and decomposing numbers.
I sent out a sign-up genius for parent conferences. If I have not contacted you for a conference, we can meet formally at another time. If you have not signed up and want to do so, there are a few spots left! I will be sending out a sign-up genius for apple tasting day soon as well as mystery reader. I usually do readers in the morning, but we are getting observed so often in the mornings that my schedule is so tight. If the times I set up do not work for you to come read and you would like to, please let me know! I sent the September homework packet on Friday. If you recall in my parent meeting, I allow parents to make the decision to use or not use the homework packet. If your child enjoys a homework packet and needs differentiated work, I will provide this monthly. However, PLEASE have your child practice our sight words each and every day. They will always be listed below under Academic Activities. Thank you for all you do and I can't believe that we already have one month behind us! Academic Activities for 9/4 I can use details from the text in order to describe ways we can play. I can identify and recognize the letter Ss. I can name nouns for people and places. I can identify, read and write the following words: I, like, the, and I can decompose numbers 4 and 5 without equations. So, here we go with the blog! Over half the class have not accessed the SEESAW app and I don't want anyone missing important information. I think I shared that after having us create websites using WIX last year, SCS decided to block WIX sites at school this year (meaning I am unable to access the site while at school). I decided that's not super helpful for a class information site. Also, I created a Kindergarten page for our team, and it seemed silly to include all the same information on a website. I used to blog, and thought this would be a great way to share information with you! So - we will see how it goes!
